What it's all about

I want to be able to create a neighborhood watch in my area with just young people. This is because i feel young people witness and are vicims to more crime than adults. in my area there are some people who have commited alot of crime towards young people and we even know their names. Nothing has been done about it because people are scared to say anything and they know that nothing will happen. A young peopls neighbourhood watch would changes this so the police are looking at one big voice of people together. this would hopefully reduce the crime in the area and make young people feel safer by offering them some sort of protection.

What's needed to make it a reality

i would need to advertise the idea to the young people in my area. i would like to get them to apply to join by giving their email adresses. this would mean i could create news letters which can be sent out. it would not be based on monthly meetings because that would not be fun for young people. It is just somewhere people can go when they do not want to tell the police. Hopefully we could offer them help and support and convince them to do the right thing. it could even be anonymous.

but i think the misconception people have with 'Snitching' should be addressed first, before most young people can feel they are doing the right thing.

  • Avatar zw!tch 12:01, 19 July 2007 That sounds like a great idea...maybe you could encourage people to pass information on to CrimeStoppers UK by calling 0800 555 111 anonomously?!

There is the idea that snitching is "unbritish", and this has been raised in discussions to do with terrorism recently - have a look here! So maybe we need to become less afraid and just "tell on people" as we used to say at primary school! The challenge is to get people to trust that it won't get traced back to them, but I think this needs to be done on an individual basis, person by person, community by community...
