What it's all about

This application isn't properly formal yet, I just need to know if I can do it. If I can, I will put the idea forward.

I've just started on a course in TV Production, and our first assignment for our Single Camera module is a 5 minute autobiographical piece. I've been thinking ferociously about the sort of thing I could do, and I came up with an idea. The basic gist of it is that we would give a homeless person £100 (or another amount of money), and we would film them for the day as they spend it on whatever they want. The condition being that they have to spend it all in the day.

Hopefully, the end result will be very enlightening, and will show those of us who are better off the real value of money to some people.

What's needed to make it a reality

£100. All the film equipment is part and parcel of the course.

  • Avatar ran 02:11, 12 October 2007 Our society doesn't lack money; it lacks compassion (especially for the homeless).

You're not going to get £100 (from most people), if society generally doesn't feel compassion for homeless people.

Empathy is VERY POWERFULL, which is why sooooo many cancer related charities receive large sums for donations (which they use to good affect and I myself am personally grateful). Most people will see cancer affect themselves or someone they know, which produces empathy and makes it seem real. In Britain (today) most people will not be affected by homelessness or even relative poverty. Meaning it will be harder for the average Briton to empathize with a homeless person.

Empathy and compassion are different (as shown below).

Empathy - the intellectual identification with or vicarious experiencing of the feelings, thoughts, or attitudes of another.

Compassion - a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering.

A human should be able to feel compassion even if they find it hard to feel empathy. But unfortunately it doesn't really work that way (for most people), which is why in such a wealthy nation homelessness is still rife.

Baconex you should go for it, I think. You've had a excellent idea but I honestly don't think you need a £100 to do it. It will probably be more powerful documenting what a homeless person does with the amount of money he/she has already got or gets.

  • Avatar Helen 10:16, 12 October 2007 Hi Tom, I think this would be great another girl has suggested a homelessness awareness week and should your documentary become a reality prehaps a screening could be a part of this week. I don't know whether some people might see this as a form of exploitation though, and also I would want to consider how you would go about finding the person who you would record. Maybe you could coe in and meet with me to discuss your idea further.
