What it's all about
I hope to set up a musical development school where children and young adults can come to develop their talents and skills with like minded youngsters. In Newcastle there are not enough opportunities for children to learn how to write songs, play musical instruments and get an insight to what it is like to be a performer so I hope to offer them that chance. The sessions will be open to anyone from skilled musicians to people who have never played a note in their life!
The eventual goal is to set up a gig for the youngsters so that they can showcase their talents to friends and family and get a real feel for what it is like to perform.
The inspiration for this project comes from the fact that I am now in a band that was started through a similar scheme. The scheme was running over three years ago, and, as a band, we are still going strong. This would not have been possible if it were not for the help of someone who genuinely wanted to see us succeed. I hope that through this project I can pass on my experience and inspire more young people to get involved with music.
What's needed to make it a reality
To start this project I will need two main things, volunteers and equipment! I am in the middle of writing to local music stores to see if they would be interested in donating some equipment which at this point seems hopeful, and with some luck I will be able to get funding to help cover some of the costs. If that still doesn't cover everything, I have spoken to local bands who would be more than happy to take part in a fundraising gig!
Volunteers is a tricky one! Volunteers who play instruments would be ideal (remember some of these kids will never have touched a musical instrument so you don’t have to be an expert to teach them!) but anyone who is willing to help would be greatly appreciated!

This sounds like a great way of getting young people interested and actively involved in music. It sounds like you can build upon your experience to give other young people an excellent opportunity to develop their musical skills as well as promoting local talented musiciians!
As you are a student studying at Northumbria University, you can access up to £750 to turn your idea into reality. As you know, this is a specific project running at Northumbria and another 14 unis across the country.
