What it's all about

The class is set up for children/teenagers who want to learn the native language and culture found specifically in East Africa called Oromo I feel that the younger generations who were born and raised in London are failing to grasp the language, let alone the culture. My mission is to start a language class for them, basic ABC's for the beginners and evolving from there, the age group is between 4- 14. I already have contact with individuals who are willing to teach them, location is a slight issue since the families of these kids are spread all over london, but we have a community centre that we hopefully could use.

What's needed to make it a reality

Finance is a big issue, for books, other materials, cost of the building and etc. I was hoping this project could be a lasting one between 8-12 weeks, 2 hours on a saturday morning, I have recieved alot of interest from parents, so i think by Gods grace it will be a success.

As you know because you are a student at Kingston University you can access up to £750 to turn your idea into a reality. The project is coming along really well so far, well done on all your hardwork. I'm really looking forward to the 1st class in a few weeks time. I'll be in touch again soon by email to see how I can help in the run up to the 1st session. Celina (VSO-Kingston)

Great to see you're going to help people learn about their cultural history As the generations go by in the UK there are more and more people losing touch with their heritage - I'm no exception! The more people can learn about where their ancestors came from the better...even if it doesn't seem to directly affect our lives at the moment.

Anyone interested in knowing some basic info about Oromo - check it out.

You could also try to contact The Oromo Community in the UK (OC-UK), which is a self-help association founded in 1986 by the Oromo. OC-UK office is currently based at:

Congratulations on your project! Its great to see the photos up on the site! This was such a great idea for a project and you should be very proud to know how successful it has been, especially as the community appreciated it so much they want the project to continue after Junction49 funding.

Well done again and let me know how its going trying to secure future funding!

It's lovely to see your project has been such a success!

I'm not sure how many generations back the families of the children you're working with have been in the UK so these first couple of ideas might not be relevant/useful...
