What it's all about
After hearing about the Tea Dance becoming popular again and a range of places having them on a ragularly basis I thought it would be a fun and worthwhile idea to get involved in and organise. The event will provisionally take place in December in the afternoon so would be great to put a xmas theme to it.
I would like to provide an opportunity for the elderly to have an afternoon where they can interact with each other in a fun and enjoyable atmosphere. Also where they can have a dance or two and enjoy tea and biscuits while listening to songs associated with days gone by. Furthermore it would be a chance for them to converse with the volunteers and pass on their experiences.
What's needed to make it a reality
Advise on the best way to go about organising such an event and making it as much a success as possible both with those attending and the volunteers getting involved.
Ways of getting as many volunteers as possible involved so that we can do it as a team and have lots of fun at the sametime.
Also not quite sure what type of equipment and decorations I will need.

It sounds like you've had a really good think about how to bring two generations of the community together - and the Tea Dance sounds like a brilliant way of developing community ties.
As you know, Northumbria is one of several Universities around the country that are taking part in the Junction 49 project. This means that you can access a grant of up to £750 and additional support and help in getting your idea off the ground.
It would be great to hear from you - feel free to drop me an email and or call in to the Student Activities Centre for a chat!
Best Wishes,

Tea is served in the Thames Foyer daily from 3: p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Thames Foyer, with a pianist. On Sundays, a tea dance usually is offered from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Nicky at Kingston University is currently planning her own tea dance, so if you've got any advice to offer her from your own experiences which may help her you can comment on her ideas page here:
