Why it was needed

It was needed for people living in Burnley to create awareness of the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN).

What's being done

We organised a project for young people and the elder generation from Burnley to come to our uni for the day. We had two visits one day for the young people and one day for the older people. In total, 17 young people and 38 older people came to the university.

As we (student leaders) are all from Burnley, we felt many people did not know much information and had little knowledge about our nearest university. Therefore we felt it was a great idea to bring them down to the uni to have a new and hopefully for some a life changing experience.

Especially for the young people, a day at UCLAN may make them want to attend the university in the future.

For both visits, we organised a presentation by a careers advisor, organised a campus tour around the university, gave them free lunch and we did a workshop in the afternoon about our own experience of uni.

How it started

There were three of us that lead the project, we went to a few youth centers (Burnley Learning Zone, Chai Centre and Breaking Barriers in Burnley etc. We informed people by presentation what we wanted to do for the project and asked if anyone would be interested participating.

Hired a minibus to transport the people involved from Burnley to the University (Preston) and back.

More

The project gave both young and old the chance to come to university for a day and have a taster of what university life entails. Thanks to Junction 49 and Sara Ali for supporting our project. We all felt it was a worthwhile project!!!
