What it's all about

I imagine that you are looking on this website because you want to organise something. You want to get involved in your local community and help to make a difference.

Why not use the grant available from Junction 49 to put on a fundraising event in aid of Save the Children? This could be anything you like - from a concert to a fashion show to a scavenger hunt - or anything else you can think of. The grant could be used to pay for things like hiring a venue or paying the bands, and then all the money you make at the event can be donated to Save the Children, to help make a difference to children's lives around the world.

We can provide you with resources for the event, such as posters, balloons, t-shirts, etc, and support to help you organise it.

You will gain valuable experience that you can put on your CV - for example event management, money management, customer facing, people management. And it's great fun!

Save the Children is the world's independent children's charity. We're outraged that millions of children are still denied proper healthcare, food, education and protection. We're working flat out to get every child their rights and we're determined to make further, faster changes. How many? How fast? It's up to you.

What's needed to make it a reality

Thanks for making it sound so nice and easy. I will think of something and talk to my primary headteacher (who is actually trying to increase media attention) and will get back to you later with an idea. If you would like to suggest something do-able in a primary school (nursery to year 4) I would greatly appreciate it.
This, however, would be more liely to happen early next year, or late december, depending of what we can come up with. Razz

Save the Children actually have something called our "Wish List" which you might find suitable for fundraising with primary pupils - this is a list of various items which you can "purchase" and we will send that gift to children who really need it. The items include things like School Uniform for £18, 40 chickens for £29, Equipping a school for a year for £53, a place for 5 children in school for £105 and teacher training for a year for £270. They are great for using with children, as they are something tangiable that they can understand what they're raising money for. We have a pack with 10 A4 posters and an order form - all designed with primary school children in mind. And we also have some ideas on how to integrate Wish List into core areas of learning, to develop an understanding of Global Citizenship. You can download these from our website - www.savethechildren.org.uk/wishlist - or if you email me your address, I can post you a hardcopy.

In terms of what you can do to raise money, sometimes the simplest ideas are the best - for example, each child could draw round their hand on a piece of card, and fill it with 5p pieces (or any other coin) that they collect from relatives, for example. Or for Christmas, they could fill an image of a Christmas tree with coins. Alternatively, putting on a nativity play or carol concert (or similar but not Christmas themed), and asking parents to make a donation to watch, can be very effective at raising money - especially if you are putting something on anyway.

Fundraising events or activities are great to get some local press coverage for the school - especially if you have consent to take photos of the children, as newspapers tend to love these types of stories. So this could help you to promote the school locally too. We can try and help you write a press release if you like.

I hope this helps, I look forward to hearing from you.

    Best wishes,
    Jenny
